Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Card - Application, Renewal and What It Means for Your Stay in Ireland

If you're a non-EEA, non-Swiss national living in Ireland for more than 90 days, the Irish Residence Permit is not optional - it's a legal requirement. The IRP card is your registration certificate, the document that proves you are lawfully present in the country under a specific immigration permission. Getting it right the first time, and keeping it current, matters more than most people initially realise.

NDL Service helps non-EEA nationals in Ireland get their IRP application and IRP card renewal handled properly, without the uncertainty that comes from navigating the immigration system alone.

What the Irish Residence Permit Actually Is

The Irish residence permit is a credit-card-sized plastic document containing your photo, date of birth, registration number, stamp category, and an embedded microchip holding your biometric data including fingerprints. It shows the type of immigration permission you hold - whether that's Stamp 1 for employment permit holders, Stamp 2 for students, Stamp 4 for those with long-term residency rights, or another category - and the date your current permission expires.

One thing worth knowing upfront: the IRP card is not an identity card. It is a registration certificate. It does not grant EU citizenship rights or freedom of movement within the EU. All standard international immigration rules continue to apply. That said, you are required to carry it at all times and produce it if asked by an immigration officer or a member of An Garda Síochána.

First-Time IRP Application Ireland - How the Process Works

Once you arrive in Ireland and your immigration permission is granted, you have 90 days to register it. Registration is how Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) formally records your permission, and it results in the issue of your IRP card by post.

Where to Register

For first-time applicants in Dublin, Meath, Kildare, Wicklow, Cork, and Limerick, registration appointments are made at the Burgh Quay Registration Office in Dublin. If you live in any other county, you register at your local Garda Immigration Office. Appointments need to be booked online through your ISD customer account - walk-ins are not accepted.

The required documents vary depending on your stamp category. Generally you'll need the biometric page of your current valid passport, your permission letter from the Department of Justice, proof of address, and supporting documents specific to your permission type. Employment permit holders need proof of employment. Students need proof of enrolled course and paid fees. The ISD provides a detailed reference guide by stamp category on their website.

The registration fee for most IRP applications is €300 per person, payable by card only. Some categories are exempt, including refugees and those under Temporary Protection.

Online Renewal of IRP Card - What Changed in 2024

From November 2024, online renewal of IRP card applications became available nationwide. This was a significant shift - previously, most renewals required in-person appointments that were booking out 15 to 20 weeks in advance in many areas. Now the ISD online portal handles renewals for almost all applicants across the country without requiring a visit to any office.

You can apply up to 12 weeks before your current IRP card expires. The ISD is currently processing applications in strict date order, with a processing time of approximately 12 weeks from submission to completion. Once approved, the new card is posted to the address in your application within 15 business days.

The Ireland residence permit renewal fee is €300 for most categories, paid online by card during the application. The online system requires you to upload digital copies of all required documents. Missing even one document means the application cannot be processed.

What Happens If Your IRP Expires

If you let your IRP lapse without renewing, you are in the country without valid immigration permission. This has serious consequences for your ability to work, access services, and remain legally in Ireland. The ISD does not issue automatic reminders - the expiry date on your current card is the only notice you have.

Applying 12 weeks before expiry is the advised approach, given current processing times.
